The coefficient of determination, typically expressed as R2 and as defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency via its SEDD Specification Version 5.2, "is the proportion of variability in a dataset that is accounted for by a statistical model." The EPA adds that "there is no consensus about the exact definition of R2; however, it is generally referred to as the 'goodness of fit' for a polynomial equation."[1]
