frePPLe is an open-source production planning framework. The software is available as a free fully-functional Community Edition and as fee-based commercial versions: Enterprise, OEM, and Cloud.

Product history

frePPLe was started by Belgian developer Johan De Taeye[2] in May 2006 as an open-source project on both SourceForge and Ohloh.[3][1] On March 4, 2007, a new website was set up to better distribute information about the software.[4] The Community Edition of the software has seen steady releases since then, including a license change from the GNU Lesser General Public License to the GNU Affero General Public License in 2012.[5]

Features

The software comes in a Community Edition, described as "fully function without any limitations. Support is available from a mailing list. This edition is suitable for do-it-yourself projects, educational purposes, or a trial installation." The developer also offers an OEM edition "for companies that want to redistribute frePPle in a proprietary product," an Enterprise Edition "for companies wishing professional support" and "more advanced features," and a cloud-hosted version.[6]

The main features of frePPLe Community Edition include[6]:

  • fixed and variable operation times
  • order prioritization
  • minimum, maximum, and multiple batch sizes
  • alternate operations, resources, and materials
  • date effective material and capacity usage
  • availability calendars
  • assembly coordination
  • pegging from raw material to demand
  • resource matrices and conversion times
  • co-products
  • time-based and quantity-based safety stocks
  • procurement policy management
  • constrained and unconstrained planning mode
  • visual reporting
  • multi-lingual

Hardware/software requirements

Installation requirements for frePPLe will vary based upon the installation method you use. The Windows installer, for example, comes with a SQLite database, meaning additional software requirements don't exist. Compiling in Windows or Linux has additional requirements. Consult the installation guide for your version for more information.
