Extensible markup language

Otherwise known as XML, Extensible Markup Language is a standard devised by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which provides a common approach to representing information over the web. It is a language for describing data. It is not owned by any one vendor and thus remains an open standard. It is text-based so it can be processed by any platform.[1]
