Bonita Open Solution is free open-source business process management (BPM) software that combines process modeling and a workflow engine in a specially designed user interface.
Product history
The Bonita project started in 2001 at INRIA Labs, a French national research institution focusing on computer science, control theory, and applied mathematics.[2][3] An ObjectWeb project was started for the software (simply known as "Bonita") on February 14, 2003[4] and the first beta of the software was publicly released later in the month.[1] The first stable release of the software (v 1.0) arrived October 31 as a JOnAS release, with a Windows executable version becoming available November 20.[1]
Steady work continued on the project, with a version 2.0 arriving on June 19, 2006 and version 4.0 on October 1, 2008 (released as Nova Bonita).[1] In June 2009, several of the original developers of the software began an initiative to develop Bonita outside of the confines of ObjectWeb, starting the business BonitaSoft and raising over €2 million in venture capital.[5] On October 23, 2009, information was released that with the upcoming version 5.0 release the name of the product would change to "Bonita Open Solution" (BOS)[6], a name that has remained since.
Starting in 2021, the developers changed the version numbering from 7.x (semantic) to 2021.x (calendar).[7]
