Affymetrix, Inc. developed and marketed genomic and microarray technologies for translational and clinical research.
History
Affymetrix was formally founded in the state of California in 1992.[2] By 1997, the company was touting its GeneChip analysis system, offering "researchers fast, efficient access to large amounts of genetic information."[3] In 1998, the GeneChip laboratory information management system (LIMS) was introduced for managing and tracking "process data, raw data, and probe array results from multiple GeneChip systems or other ... genetic information source."[4] In 2001, version 3.0 of their LIMS—renamed to Affymetrix LIMS—was introduced to the market.[5] However, by the early 2000s, the LIMS software may have been integrated into the GeneChip Operating Software (GCOS) platform.[6]
In December 2005, Affymetrix announced that Applied Biosystems had "taken a non-exclusive, worldwide license to a number of Affymetrix patents related to" various microarrays.[7]
In January 2016, Thermo Fisher Scientific announced the intent to acquire Affymetrix for $14.00 per share in cash, at a purchase price of approximately $1.3 billion.[8] The deal was finalized March 31, 2016.[1] By 2020, the acquired Affymetrix solutions were rebranded to "Applied Biosystems."[9] (Thermo had prior acquired Life Technologies in 2013[10], which was the byproduct of the 2008 merger of Applied Biosystems and Invitrogen in November 2008.[11])

Affymetrix LIMS was a LIMS "developed to meet our customers’ requirements for management of the large amount of experimental information generated using Affymetrix GeneChip technology."[5]
