|This is my favorite subject at the university level. I have always found infectious diseases to be especially interesting.|
Microbiology is a branch of Biology dealing with the study of microscopic life. The study includes the study of virii, bacteria, fungi, and parasites to name a few. Some of these organisms can cause illnesses in humans, and some are necessary for life to continue, such as the bacteria in the colon which aid in digestion of food.
pathogenic microbes come in two different types. Opportunistic and non-opportunisitic. Opportunisitic ones are found naturally in the body and only become pathogenic when there are too many of them.
However, non-opportunisitic pathogenic microbes, simply cause disease.
Some Pathogens include: E-Coli, Staph, and Strep
You can read more about these pathogens at the CDC website
Fun with microbes
One of the best things about microbes is how much fun they can be! You can get plush toy versions of many types of microbes at Giant Microbes.
- Common Cold
- Spermatazoa (regular human sperm cell)
- Flesh Eating Bacteria
To name a few. It is really a lot of fun!
