Labworks, LLC (Labworks) develops and distributes laboratory informatics software, including the LABWORKS laboratory information management system (LIMS).

History

LABWORKS LIMS was originally built in 1985 and is considered the first "Enterprise" level LIMS. LABWORKS LIMS was acquired from PerkinElmer by Labworks, LLC (Labworks) in March 2016 by former employees of PerkinElmer Inc. (PKI) in order to better support the 500+ customer base and to continue/increase investment in the LABWORKS LIMS product line. "The Labworks employees were tired of seeing a lack of focus and investment in the LABWORKS LIMS product suite," the company stated, "so they partnered with experienced industry executives, along with private investors, and made the case to PKI that the Labworks product and customers deserved better."[1] With the acquisition of Labworks in May 2016[2], the new company stated it would be releasing a version 6.6 of the software later in the summer, with a focus "on migrating functionality from the local client to web based functions and eventually to an 'as-a-Service' model."[2] Since the acquisition in 2016, Labworks has release seven(7) versions of the LABWORKS LIMS suite and many new products including eLIMS (web based version), Mobile Connect (mobile device version), and Exchange Portal (Customer facing portal) along with new SaaS options. LABWORKS LIMS 7.1 is the most recent version with 7.2 scheduled in April of 2023.[3]

Technology and products

LABWORKS

LABWORKS is a LIMS that "provides all of the functionality needed to manage a fully functional laboratory and to manage and automate the full sample/analyses processes from end-to-end."[4] The software was originally developed by PerkinElmer. LABWORKS LIMS is known for:

  • Flexibility: 95% of current customers have ZERO customizations as most requirements can be met through simple "Configuration" through the hundreds of configuration options available in LABWORKS.
  • Ease of Use: LABWORKS is the easiest and most intuitive LIMS available and users can be productive with little training.
  • Innovation: Labworks LLC invests heavily in engineering and constantly improving the product and the new LABWORKS eLIMS product is the most modern architecture of any LIMS.
