Zimbra is project management and productivity software software designed to help businesses collaborate better. The software is available both as a commercial fee-based product and a free open-source product called Zimbra Collaboration Server (ZCS) Open Source Edition.
Product history
Zimbra originated from Zimbra, Inc., which was founded in 2003.[2] It's not clear how much work was being conducted on the software from 2003 to 2004, but Zimbra unveiled a new website in the fall of 2005, announcing the beta launch of its open-source Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS).[3] An official announcement followed soon after in October[4], with an associated SourceForge project starting on November 17.[5] After a series of betas, the first stable open-source version of ZCS was released on February 8, 2006.[1]
On September 17, 2007, Zimbra, Inc. announced it had been acquired by Yahoo! Inc., causing some users to be wary of the software's future.[6][2] Shortly after the acquisition, ZCS source code stopped appearing on SourceForge.[7] Zimbra releases were still available on the Zimba.com website after the acquisition, however.[8]
