Bruker Corporation develops and manufactures NMR, EPR, MRI, FT-IR, mass spectrometry, and x-ray equipment. The company also develops and distributes laboratory informatics software solutions for industries that utilize that equipment.

History

In December 2018, Bruker Corporation announced that it had "entered into a strategic partnership [with Mestrelab Research] to advance chemistry software that handles spectroscopic data and extracts and manages chemical information from a variety of analytical techniques." As part of the partnership, Bruker became a majority shareholder in Mestrelab Research.[1]

In March 2019, Bruker Corporation announced that it had acquired Arxspan, LLC and its laboratory informatics solutions. It wasn't clear at the time how Arxspan would operate due to the acquisition, but the company is presumably operating as a division of Bruker.[2]

In December 2021, Bruker announced it was "supporting" the combined efforts of its majority-held Mestrelab Research and analytical data management company ZONTAL towards a "an innovative analytical data management and analysis solution that ... enables efficient and effective utilization of analytical molecular data." Bruker added: "Bruker is committed to expanding their cloud-based, scientific software for chemistry and pharma customers and to providing intuitive end-to-end solutions that make analysis and knowledge extraction in scientific research faster and easier."[3] It was not made clear what level of support was provided, but presumably some sort of financial and/or personnel support was being provided by Bruker.

In April 2022, Bruker announced that it had acquired Optimal Industrial Automation and Technologies, justifying the acquisition as supporting "more comprehensive solutions for the biopharmaceutical industry, now adding the capabilities to integrate cutting-edge systems into biopharma manufacturing processes and workflows."[4]

In May 2023, Bruker announced that it had acquired ZONTAL. Bruker justified the acquisition as having the potential to "enable integrated digital laboratory and process data management, combining vendor-agnostic data storage and analysis, as well as workflow tools to help scientists realize the full potential of their analytical laboratory and process digital assets," as part of its "Integrated Data Solutions" (IDS) software division, the first time such a division had been mentioned publicly by the company.[5] It is possible this division is an extension of the support efforts lent to Mestrelab and ZONTAL collaboration in 2021.[3] The May 2023 press release further went on about the integration of ZONTAL's offering with those of Mestrelab Research, Arxspan, and Optimal.

A little over a month later, Bruker announced its branded platform SciY was being launched by its IDS division "in close collaboration with majority-owned software companies Mestrelab Research, Arxspan, Optimal Industrial Technologies, and ZONTAL, along with biopharma automation company Optimal Industrial Automation." Bruker stated that this platform "of vendor-agnostic software solutions allows the integration of our customers’ physical laboratory instruments and automation hardware with their scientific research, development, and manufacturing data into a digital environment to deliver maximum value with minimum effort and disruption."[6] The company essentially confirmed its long-term endpoint was an evolution of acquisitions and partnerships by adding that "SciY is a brand of Bruker Integrated Data Solution division that was born from collaborations and majority-acquisitions of renowned vendor-agnostic software partners."

Other acquisitions made by Bruker since April 2022 include PhenomeX, ACQUIFER Imaging, Neurescence, Inscopix, and MIRO Analytical.[7]

Technology and products

SciY platform:

SciY is a platform-based approach to addressing the workflow and data management needs in a variety of industries, "ranging from medical technology and pharmaceuticals to materials science and food research."[8] It is the product of a multi-year partnership and acquisition effort by Bruker to create a collection of software resources that better "allows the integration of our customers’ physical laboratory instruments and automation hardware with their scientific research, development, and manufacturing data."[6] The platform currently focuses on the offerings of Arxspan, Mestrelab, Optimal, and ZONTAL.[8]

For more on Arxspan Notebook, an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) and workflow management solution, see Arxspan, LLC.

For more on Mbook, a chemistry-based ELN, see Mestrelab Reseach S.L..

Optimal's synTQ PAT Knowledge Management software is described as enabling "real-time process monitoring and the control of critical quality attributes, non-invasively," to better ensure concepts such as "quality by design" using process analytical technology.[8]

For more on ZONTAL, a scientific data management system (SDMS), see Zontal, Inc.

Other Bruker automation solutions:

SampleTrack is a laboratory automation and management system that "manages all automation process steps in an analytical environment."[9]

Chromatography software:

BioPharma Compass (formerly CompassCDS[10] and Compass[11]) is a chromatography data system (CDS) "suitable for mass spectrometry experts and routine users alike."[12]

Compass HyStar (formerly HyStar[13]) is chromatography software "that combines Bruker acquisition, processing and report generation software in various dedicated workflows."[14]

Pricing

Pricing is not made public for any combined access to the SciY platform. However, some vendors like Mestrelab Research still provide public pricing for their offerings; see their individual pages for more.
